Disney x Play Imaginative Toys Play Foul

Artist and toy designer Sergio Mancini has alleged Play Imaginative are not fulfilling a toy design contract after several years of design, production and excuses. The toy in question, pictured above, is a design contracted from Sergio based on his hand-painted custom for their Play Imaginative Mickey 2012 showcase.

The toy is fully produced through Play Imaginative, and the design is even appropriately credited to Sergio on their website.

Play Imaginative is no stranger to licensing- with an expansive line of active licenses from globally recognized popular culture brands. Meaning there's no excuse to jerk anyone around with fulfilling a contract. Especially when the original artwork was provided to them for their showcase for free, and production design payout consists of only 20 production pieces.

Sergio is no stranger to licensing and production design either, with global clients including Kidrobot, Andrew Bell's Android Mini, Toy2R, Designer Apparel brands and a CV of international exhibitions. Companies would do well to tidy up their business with contracted designers. 

So, why blog it? After a generous amount of time going in circles by email, independent creative professionals usually get to choose between public awareness or letting things go. For small contracts, a legal consult and retainer to even plan taking a negligent party to task would be more costly than the payout due. As a creative community we can hold companies accountable, and inform their patrons and potential designers of potential risks. Disney, and many others, have licensed their character's friendly faces to companies they trust to represent them. And this kind of treatment in representation of anyone's intellectual property deserves a pass.

Dynamite Rex Raar! Exhibition Reveals- Patrick Wong

 

 

The Dynamite Rex "Raaar!" Exhibition is coming up quick. Opening at The Clutter Gallery on August 10th, the exhibition features a lineup of skilled artists customizing 6" Vinyl Raar toys, as well as lucky contest winners- like Patrick Wong.

The Black by Sergio Mancini

Sergio Mancini just keeps on producing, like his own mini factory! Sergio Mancini decided that he was not content with a single custom 8" Dunny based off his outsmART Originals T-Shirt, "The Black". He liked the design so much that Sergio is going to create a limited number of custom 3" Dunnys based off the same design. No word on edition size, other than it being limited, as stated on the Storenvy product page. Priced at $100 plus shipping, the pre-order goes up shortly, at 11AM EST on January 5th. Sergio is also making several other colorways available, in addition to the original blue design, he has added red, green, silver and gold.

 

Be sure to check out the product page to see the rendering for the other 3 colors. Good luck to all who are going to try and snag one of these custom Dunnys.

Red Mutuca members Sergio Mancini and Igor Ventura recently created a duo of amazing custom Chuckboy Dunnys for a private collector.

Chuck couldn't take it anymore! Just because he was Mommy's boy, all the bullys at school gave him a beating everyday! What could he do? He had no friends other than books, and alone he couldn't stand a chance... Well, maybe if he had a special suit, he could scare off those suckers! His enemies were no match to his brains and some old bottles of kids shampoo! Chuck is now Vintagebot and all the bullys can kiss his plastic ass!

I'm really digging the execution on both of these customs. I especially like the Vintagebot color scheme. These are going to make great additions to what I believe is an ever growing collection of custom chuckboy dunnys, by the private collector who commissioned these.

Having purchased several different brands of limited edition T-shirts myself, the $25 price tag is pretty good. The current and previous designs have been outstanding representations of each individual artist. I personally don't like the quality of American Apparel shirts, however, the great designs make each outsmART Originals T-shirt worth getting. Keep in mind that each design is released for a limited amount of time and/or quantity, so pick up one while you can or regret that decision later.
