Kidrobot & Ello Founder Paul Budnitz Launches New Designer Toy Company SUPERPLASTIC Today

by
-->
WELL-KNOWN ARTIST & ENTREPRENEUR RETURNS TO ART TOYS WITH  NEW JANKY TOY SERIES FEATURING 16 WORLD-FAMOUS ARTISTS —

New York, NY — May 15, 2018 — Acclaimed artist & entrepreneur Paul Budnitz (Kidrobot, Ello, Budnitz Bicycles) launches his designer toy company Superplastic today, with new limited edition toys by renowned artists for sale today on Kickstarter.

Superplastic’s launch edition toys feature designs by 16 well-known artists including McBess, Camilla d’Errico, Jake Parker, Pete Fowler, Dalek, Ricardo Carvolo, Joe Ledbetter, El Grand Chamaco, Junko Mizuno, and many others.

Designer toys meld pop culture, street art, and fashion into limited edition works of art. Fans are well-known for lining up for hours — or days — for a new release.

“These aren’t just toys — they’re art,” says Budnitz. “With so much emphasis on digital culture, people are literally starved for something beautiful to hold in their hands.”

Superplastic begins selling JANKY today —  a sneaker-obsessed anthropomorph that’s somewhere between cute and dark, nasty and nice. Prices range for $25 for a handful of 3-inch toys to $5,000 for an exclusive handmade 4-foot version.

The figure took 8 months to design, and is a collaboration between Budnitz and Superplastic art director Huck Gee, whose handmade toys sell for $50K and above. Both Budnitz and Gee are featured in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

“Where others see toys, Budnitz saw a medium for art,” says Gee. “Paul is as excited about creating experiences as products, and that’s what made art toy culture explode.”

Budnitz has been credited with launching the designer toy revolution when he opened his first Kidrobot store in New York City in 2004 (he left the company in 2012 to found Ello & Budnitz Bicycles). His return has been anticipated. The Superplastic home page began receiving tens of thousands of visits a day in late April, in anticipation of the Superplastic launch.

“The man is back! The man is back!”, tweeted XM Radio’s DJ Whookid, a longtime fan.

Other super limited-edition toys available on Kickstarter today include a giant sized 8” SuperJANKY entitled Ro-Mu-Lo by Mexican artist El Grand Chamaco; and Maximilian Cash by UK artist Pete Fowler, a psychedelic 9-inch tall vinyl toy with fangs, sneakers, a boombox, and a glowing blue skull. Both are limited to just 666 pieces.

Says Fowler, “Paul called and asked if I would make toys with him again. I was like — shit is oooonnnn!!”

When Kickstarter approached Budnitz & Gee last fall about launching Superplastic on the popular crowdfunding platform, they jumped.

"This project is really going to resonate with our Kickstarter community, which loves to support the intersection of art and design," says Julio Terra, Director of Technology & Design for Kickstarter.

“We immediately saw Kickstarter as a brilliant new way for us to connect with our audience,” says Gee. “Of course, we decided to do crowdfunding a little differently.”

Once their basic $25K goal is reached, the team will unlock a range of fun challenges and exclusive stretch goals. Kickstarter backers get to launch toys into space, write a Haiku about their favorite toy, or get a JANKY tattoo. When all 35 challenges are completed, every single backer gets an extra JANKY toy for just one cent.

Partway through the campaign Superplastic will also unveil JANKYLAND, a 3-D rendered glitch-art mobile game where fans can play for free on iPhone & Android.

“In a world where most things are rebooted, repackaged and resold, everything Superplastic does is new and original,” says Budnitz. “It’s why our fans are so excited.”

Trash Bag Bunch XL Kickstarter by Last Resort Toys is LIVE

by

The goal of this Kickstarter is to factory produce original vinyl toys licensed from the 1991 toy series, Trash Bag Bunch. These are new, larger-scale toys, based on the characters from the classic toy line. Trash Bag Bunch XL are four times the size of the original mini figures with added detail and articulation. Designed, sculpted, and prototyped by hand.

What's Trash Bag Bunch?

Trash Bag Bunch was a set of mini figures released by Galoob in 1991. It had a great play gimmick where the toys were packed in little trash bags and you didn't know what toy you had until you dropped the bag into water where it would dissolve; frothing and foaming to reveal your new toy! If you want to take a deeper dive into the history of the toys, take a peek at Mel Birnkrant's website where he details the conception of these gross little guys.

Hambuddha 8-inch Vinyl by Tik Ka and Mighty Jaxx Drops May 5

by

“Eat them burgers, for fast food is the fastest path to the Pure Land”  – Hambuddha

From the brilliant mind of Hong Kong artist Tik Ka From East, comes Hambuddha, originating from his “Eat Good West” painting series.

This concept came from the artist’s idea that fast food is responsible for speeding up our journey to Sukhāvatī, the Pure Land, which is the place that we go to after we pass away.

Hambuddha may look like a regular Buddha sculpture from the back, with a halo around his head, but he wears clown-like makeup, reminding us of a famous fast food mascot.
He holds a pearl-like hamburger in his hand and sits in a single lotus position on a deliciously golden-brown lotus throne.

Hambuddha sits 8" tall, is made from vinyl and comes in a limited edition of 300 pcs only. Bring this meaningful and humorous figure home today!

  • 8" / 20cm Tall Vinyl Art Collectible
  • Blister-packed in Printed box
  • Limited Edition of 300
  • $169 ea

Full Reveal of the Plaseebo SUM Vinyl Creature via Planet-X at Mandarake May 5 in Japan

by

The first release of the Plaseebo “SUM” creature in vinyl will be this Saturday, May 5th, in Japan at the MANDARAKE "Indy Sofubi Rally”. Look for PlANET-X.  URL: www.planetx.asia EMAIL: info@planetx.asia IG / FB: planetxasia

" THE LEGEND OF SUM "

Driving home from the local red neck bar one moon lit summer night, Roy swerves his pick up toward a  dark shape that is slowly moving along side the road. A loud CRACK shatters the darkness as the front tire breaks the giant snapping turtles' shell in two, right down the center. The great snapper rolls down the embankment into the stream and Roy's laughing fades as the truck turns to cross the bridge to his shabby farm house across the stream.

The turtle, floating belly up is carried downstream to the other side and is swept into a quiet eddy where he sinks watching the moon fade from yellow to blood red through the darkening water.
This small pool cut into the bank of the stream was at the back Roy's property and he used it as his personal dump site. The water caught in this hole became a terrible toxic soup of motor oil, fertilizer, broken toys, bones and entrails of many slaughtered animals, rusty tools and who knows what else.
Over the next few months, a strange transformation took place in this evil chowder as it baked in the summer heat. A creature of revenge, born of cruelty and neglect slid its way out of the sickening mess one dark September night.

Roy's body was never found, nor could anyone explain the slime trail from the bedroom through the field behind the house.

Over the years that followed, other neglectful farmers vanished on moonless nights and folks reported vague sightings of a creature that seamed to be cobbled together from a collection of garbage, an old doll, bone, rotted skin, and broken tools, with a large snapping turtle skull for a head. They call him "SUM".
