UVD Toys is excited to announce their latest pin collaboration with the artist Brian Ewing! In 2017 the artist most famously known for his rock posters and tattooing created a poster called "The Kiss" inspired by a movie you may have heard of. UVD Toys has transformed the design into a 1.5" offset metal pin to capture the exact design as depicted on the classic poster. These pins will be available Thursday July 26th at Noon EST HERE for $15 each (which includes free US shipping). If you are a fan of Ewing's classic anatomy poster style then this is the perfect item to add to your collection!

I don't usually listen to podcasts but this one I made an exception for: there's podcast called "The Blind Box" which is sort of a mystery podcast- same hosts each time but different guests and topics. Fortunately for us, one of the hosts is into designer toys, so he is familiar with our scene and likes to discuss it. In Episode 92, Frank Kozik is the guest. Frank discusses in quite a bit of detail his plan for Kidrobot, how things are moving along, plans for future releases, product mix, etc etc. All the juicy stuff you wanna hear about. Give it a listen, if you're on a Mac or iPhone you can click right through to iTunes here, otherwise you can just listen to it right here on their website.
Here's their synopsis of the Kozik segment:
Kid Robot Fan? This is for you. Episode 92 we have a very special guest. Frank Kozik, Kid Robot's Creative Director & long time artist stops by to talk about the future of KR. Frank talks about his current position, the myth of "Kid Robot Vs. Funko", & a whole slew of new products on the way from the new & improved Kid Robot team. We talk why licensing seems to work for multiple reasons, if we should be looking out for the return of Kid Robot stores in your city, as well as Bob Burgers, Home Movies & price drops in the near future. Frank also takes some time to talk Clockwork Orange, Labbits being inspired by Hello Kitty! & running a record label in the 90's. Seriously, if you're a fan of past or present Kid Robot, you need to hear what they have planned for the future.

Mindzai currently has a Kickstarter to produce a 5 inch designer art toy, based on one infamous Toronto Mayor. Cartoonist Rodger Beck and Mindzai aim to get the funding to produce this desktop figure which will include several interchangeable signs, each featuring a different statement. Currently, there are still a lot of early reward backer spots left at 40 CAD, which includes the original colorway of the figure to be produced. With reward levels as small as 5 CAD, every little bit helps move the project to being a success. Mindzai has mostly everything needed to go into full production, including the digital sculpting files, packaging, and wax moulds. All that's needed is some additional funding to get this hilarious figure into people's hands. Check out the video and pledge for a reward level.
The Kickstarter runs until August 20th and needs 12,500 CAD to be considered funded. Spread the word and lets get something better than Potato Salad funded and created.

I was really excited when, at the last minute, I heard that the artists from Elite Gudz had been tapped to perform live art and customization in the Designer Toys aisle of the NY Toy Fair! The platforms for this project are the Mannequinz you see in the following shots.
Elite Gudz, headed up by street artist/designer/entrepreneur Phetus, is a Long Island, NY-based creative studio. One of their many projects is the Concrete Immortalz comic book. Their roster of artists includes some of the best and brightest of NY-area street artists from all walks of the art world: Phetus' resume spans the fashion, design & comic book worlds, Rolo works in illustration and fashion, Mr Den is a tattoo artist, sculptor & painter, Brian works on comic books and handles PR for Elite Gudz, Narek's a digital painter & illustrator, my buddy NEMO, of course, is an independent sculptor & painter extraordinaire who I've mentioned countless times.
Toy Fair got in touch with Elite Gudz not so long ago and offered them a spot so they could show attendees some art in action. I have to say, their booth does lend quite a bit of street cred to an otherwise all-business convention.
Elite Gudz setting up early Sunday, the first day of Toy Fair:

Rolo gets to work on a Wall Lord-themed Mannequin:

Narek, NEMO & Phetus starting their projects:

Rolo cannot be stopped, he just bangs out the most amazing illustrations in minutes:

Mr Den sometimes smiles.
But even when he does, he somehow still looks like he might rip your arms off. He's a really nice guy, I swear:

NEMO in his element, pushin clay:

Phetus at the start of what looks like a very colorful Mannequinz project:

I told you Rolo works fast. The dude's a phenom:

If you can, stop by booth #4954 on the lower level of the Javits to check out the artists at work!
I am sure Elite Gudz will be posting up pics of the finished Mannequinz on their website after Toy Fair.
You can also fan them on Facebook.

I must have a bad case of HUTA, since I missed this last week:
Each day last week, ToyCyte's Jeremy Brautman released a piece of his essay series about blind-box toys. He managed to interview scores of artists, retailers and manufacturers during his research. It's a veritable Who's Who of movers and shakers in the toy business.
I must say that this is one of the most thorough, well-thought-out pieces of expository writing I have ever read within our designer toy industry. Kudos, Jeremy!

There was a small line of people still waiting outside to get their toys signed by Simone! We got there a little late, after 4, so we couldn't get on line for the signing anymore. We went right inside instead and met Simone, for the first time actually. We've been selling tokidoki toys for about 3 years now and I've never shaken the guy's hand! Glad I got a chance to do that finally. He was very gracious even after having spent the previous 3 hours signing stuff for people.
He actually had a few more people in line so I kept it short with him and let him get back to his thing.
The store itself was small but had a great representation of tokidoki bags, apparel, skate decks and toys to choose from. For the most part the toys there were Strangeco's tokidoki selection, which we have carried ever since the very first Sandy & Sabochan vinyls! By the way, we are also able to get the tokidoki skate decks if anyone is interested (and all of the tokidoki stickers as well!)
Another great thing about the Spring St location is its proximity to the Kidrobot store. You can definitely get your designer toy fix down there pretty easily. Also on the same street are the Mac store and Opera Gallery. Opera often hosts art shows by well-known toy artists. Last one I saw there was Ron English. I'd highly recommend a trip to Spring St if you live in NYC or you are close enough to visit. You could definitely make a day of it- plenty to see and do, and some cute places to sit down and eat. It also crosses Broadway at one of the busiest, most dense shopping areas of NYC. Lots of designer clothing stores and about a billion sneaker joints for all of you sneakerheads.

...we are working out little butts off over here at Tenacious Toys, trying to get our new & improved website up & running. One aspect of the new Tenacious Toys site is this blog, which we will link to from our new homepage.
The purpose of this blog is to keep you informed about what's going on in our store, without having to shoot off newsletter emails every day. We will be posting up info about upcoming toys, artists, pics and info about anything else related to our shop.
We have been talking about switching hosts and putting up a new website for a while now, and we finally got the time to get that big project done without the help of outside designers or programmers. Okay, almost done. We will most likely end up launching the new website this upcoming week. It's a lot of work, especially with our old website still up & running, orders to fill and 3 trade shows in NY this month. Whew!
Benny is off the Toy Fair today to scope out new toys and meet with vendors. In particular we are going to finally meet in person the distributor that is handling the fulfillment of our orders from Toy2R USA! So in the upcoming months, expect more Toy2R products at Tenacious Toys.
And with that, we're off!
