 Topps has just posted a new update in their over-funded campaign for the Mars Attacks trading cards on Kickstarter. This newest update highlights our friends at Sidekick Labs and their unique production capabilities. This is not really news to those of us who have collected The Art Hustle, Buff's Melty Misfits or Suckadelic's Suckpax, but Sidekick might actually be a new name for people who collect other types of trading cards. Topps Mars Attacks Occupation trading card series FUNDED on Kickstarter with 20 days to go! That means you still have time to get your pledge in! This KS campaign is going full steam so make sure you pledge before your favorite reward tier is sold out (some of them already are). I just backed it!

Best of all, this card series will be printed up OLD-SKOOL STYLE by our friends at Sidekick Labs, the planet's premier vintage-style trading card printers! The Art Hustle cards were printed by Sidekick, and you gotta love those! This is a huge project for Sidekick, to partner with Topps- probably the world's most recognizable name in trading cards. Big ups to Sidekick for taking on this project, and HUGE props to Topps for choosing an extremely capable DOMESTIC production partner. I can't think of a better choice for this project.

Below is the press release from May 6th, an awesome press release because I think they wanted to send it out just as the KS was launching - the way it reads, the PR was sent the day after launch... well, I bet they had to rewrite it at the last minute because the campaign was fully funded within 7 HOURS of launch! Man, I wish all my press releases started off like this...

TOPPS LAUNCHES (AND FUNDS) MARS ATTACKS CARD SET ON KICKSTARTER

May 6, 2015 - Yesterday afternoon at 1:00PM EST, The Topps Company launched the all–new trading card series, Mars Attacks: Occupation on Kickstarter.   After just 7 hours, the funding goal of $50,000 was achieved and several stretch goals have already been met, including a new subset featuring the long-awaited return of the 1980's card series Dinosaurs Attack!, in a crossover with the dastardly Martians.

On Kickstarter, fans and collectors can pledge at a variety of levels to pre-order boxes, complete sets, bundles of items or even unique rewards such as the opportunity to have their likeness appear in the series!  Add-on items include: “hot packs” guaranteed to contain sought-after super-rare "hit” cards; chase cards and parallel variants; plus collector binders and more!   Stretch goals will add new cards, bonus items and special features. 

The initial funding goal will create a 72 base card set with 18 chase cards (now 24 with Dinosaurs Attack!), 3 levels of parallels and incredible hits like sketch cards, metal cards, autographs and letter-press cards.

But that's not all!  Backers who get in early will have access to limited-edition bundle pledges that include large master collections-- and other valuable reward levels-- so fans should be encouraged to act quickly.  More stretch goals, new add-on items and additional features will be unveiled as the campaign builds steam.

Once the campaign concludes on June 1, Mars Attacks: Occupation will go into production, with a scheduled ship-date of December 15th.

NYCC 2014 - Hip Hop Trooper from Team Tenacious Toys

A few days before NYCC 2014 and a few more exclusives are being revealed. The latest reveal is a Hip Hop Trooper from Tenacious Toys and Team Tenacious.

Here is the project as explained by Benny:

We are super stoked to reveal our final #NYCC Exclusive - a 3.75" bootleg-style @hiphoptrooper action figure, executed by Team Tenacious with the blessing of Hip Hop Trooper himself! Figure comes with Def Star Thumper and gold chain accessories, in a blister clamshell with full color artwork! Big big thanks to @s_a_monster for the impressively detailed paint on the figures, @manlyart for the ridiculous card back artwork, @sidekicklab for printing the cards, and Tenacious Toys Operations Manager @kris_dulfer for handling literally every other part of this project, from the figures to the accessories to the purchasing. Truly a team effort here. 100 figures, $65 each. Look for a few figures to be held back and sold online after NYCC to benefit Hip Hop Trooper's charity of choice!

Designer Toy Awards Trading Cards

This year's Designer Toy Awards spotlighted some truly amazing artists and the people and companies that support them.  One of the best of among was the Tenacious Toys toy store (but I'm a little bias).  Now Designer Toy Awards has partnered with Sidekick Lab to bring fans of designer toys a set of collector cards featuring the finalists from this years awards.  The set includes 177 base cards, 27 variants, special signature cards, and Golden Ticket Redemption cards.  Those Golden Tickets can win you everything from original art to one-off Designer Toys, print, hand painted customs, and even a complete trading card subset pack!

Each pack will cost $5 apiece and contain 8 random cards, though the true collector will definitely want one of the only 100 made Factory Sets, which include all the following in a special foil-stamped box for only $85:

All 177 base cards in the series;
all 27 variant cards in the series;
one random signature card;
one Golden Ticket Redemption Card; and
we'll even hand you one of the promo only Hello Kitty x KISS cards!

Packs and boxes are available throughout the 2013 New York Comic Con at Clutter Magazine's Booth #504 and SideKick Lab's Booth #203.

DesignerToysUK reviews Art Hustle, SuckPax and My Dad's Record Collection

Check out what happens when we send some art cards to the UK to be reviewed by Dan Byrne, without giving him ANY background whatsoever about the Sidekick Lab product line! He's a little confused by some of the more esoteric cards, but that's to be expected. Great video. Much respect to DesignerToysUK. Check out their new Facebook page too!

First Annual 2nd Avenue Trading Card Convention and Swap Meet/brothel

The other night we went down to Toy Tokyo Underground in downtown NYC to the 1st Annual 2nd Ave Trading Card Convention, which was basically a chance for all of us artists, card nerds and toy store owners to get together, party, trade cards, drink beer, draw naughty things in inappropriate places, and generally revel in all that is good and right with the world. It was crazy fun!

Check the video. You'll see Tom of Sidekick Labs (they made the Art Hustle cards), Simeon (the gigantic dude who came up with the Art Hustle concept and brought it to reality), the Sucklord, Phetus and a whole motley crew of NYC crazies, including NEMO, Mr. Den, Rolo, Lowell, Kid Lew, King Abnon and Tony Depew.

Simeon dropped the bomb on us that Tenacious Toys would have a card in Art Hustle Series 3. Made our whole month! I picked up some of the Suckadelic SuckPax Series 2 cards, traded some of our NYCC Travis Louie cards, and met Jared, a super fan (and a customer) who flew in from Texas! A great night. I took a million pictures and I haven't even uploaded them yet because we've been dealing with a tsunami of ThreeA orders this week.

Sunday October 10th with be a big day for Art Hustle fans at our NYCC Booth (#2878):

1PM- Sidekick Labs present to sign their Art Hustle cards

2PM- NEMO will be signing sketchbooks, toys and of course Art Hustle cards!

We're going to have a NYCC Exclusive special foil-stamped Art Hustle card that does not normally appear in the regular packs, available ONLY at the Tenacious Toys booth! More info on that card soon.

We'll also be showcasing a number of NEMO sculpts in our glass cases, and he will be bouncing back and forth between our booth and the Elite Gudz booth all weekend, so keep an eye out for him!
