Why I Re-Established Our Relationship with Kidrobot

by
In June of 2013 I pretty much gave up on Kidrobot, and I wrote a long blog post about why I no longer wished to stock their art toys. I'm not even going to delete that post, I still stand behind everything I griped about there.

In a nutshell, here's what I was bitching about (copied directly from old post):
  1. Wholesale accounts could not sell Kidrobot products on eBay.
  2. Wholesale accounts could not sell the Kidrobot blind-boxed items as open-box.
  3. Online retailers only got access to certain designated items. No 8" Dunnys to online-only retailers.
  4. Brick and mortar retailers granted a free "case exclusive" Dunny to give to buyers of Dunny cases as a reward for their purchase.
Since I wrote that post, a LOT has changed for Kidrobot:

They closed up a bunch of their famous brick & mortar locations (not sure about the other shops, but I know for a fact that the NYC flagship store was unsustainably expensive to rent each month). This, I'm sure, put them in a better position in terms of cash flow.

A natural result of those closings is that they cut down on their staff/employees. Sad, but another money saver.

They did a number of clearance sales, eliminating much of their overstock and dead stock by selling it at super discounts to both customers and retailers.

They slowed down their new releases temporarily (as far as I can tell).

Most importantly, they were acquired by a company called NECA (National Entertainment Collectibles Association). The NECA acquisition allowed Kidrobot to stop struggling so hard to pay bills and instead focus on refreshing and revamping of their product lines. From the investors' standpoint, the previous venture capitalists that were backing Kidrobot were able to cash out and exit.

So, Kidrobot went from a company whose direction was almost certainly dictated by non-art-toy-related people (VCs), to a company whose direction is dictated group of people whose sole focus is the creation of awesome collectibles (NECA). Appointing Frank Kozik as Creative Director ensured that the Kidrobot culture/aesthetic would remain firmly within the bounds of what we all expect from them.

That's a lot of changes.

With all those changes, the Kidrobot "illuminati" were able to re-shape the way the company works with retailers. No more will online retailers be considered second-class partners. I had a lengthy conversation with a long-time Kidrobot employee a few months ago which showed me that they were serious about creating a more positive relationship with online retailers like Tenacious Toys. I was thrilled to have that conversation. I am not a person who burns bridges. I always do my best to maintain positive relationships whenever possible, whether it's in my personal life or in business. That's why I chose my words carefully in that blog post in 2013. I wanted to complain loudly so that they heard me, while still remaining as constructive as possible, and I think it paid off.

My recent conversation with the Kidrobot employee revealed that I am now able to purchase ANY Kidrobot product, without limitations. That means we can now stock the cornerstone 8-inch Kidrobot Dunnys once more! Just for reference, the last one they allowed me to buy was the Kozik Redrum 8-inch Dunny in 2006 (so long ago, I had to consult Trampt to figure out what year that was). I can also now stock their "Premium" items like the Kidrobot Black line of figures and other items previously reserved for brick & mortar locations. I am not entirely sure if this is true for ALL other online-only shops. I haven't really asked around (there aren't that many of us left anymore).

To that end, I have placed my first order with Kidrobot in a long, long time: the upcoming Junko Mizuno Violet Soda Lady 8-inch Dunny. I love Junko and this piece looks phenomenal from the randomly leaked images I've seen. I have unhidden our Kidrobot page and added KR back into our Manufacturers menu in preparation.

There were a couple other issues I dealt with in my 2013 blog post that have since become irrelevant: I am no longer ordering blind box toys and low-ticket items from any manufacturer. I looked long and hard at our numbers and decided that it no longer makes financial sense for Tenacious Toys to sell items priced under $40 or $50.

Because of this shift, I no longer care about selling any blind box toys, or opened-blind-box toys. I am not sure whether KR will continue their old practice of providing "free" case exclusive Dunnys to shops that buy cartons of their 3" Dunny series, but it hardly matters to me since I'm not stocking those items.

Furthermore, I no longer wish to give eBay a percentage out of my sales of art toys, so selling Kidrobot toys on eBay is now a moot point for me. I'm slowly dialing back inventory in our eBay shop and removing toy items from it.

Basically, with all the changes that both Kidrobot and Tenacious Toys have gone through in the last 2 years, all my previous concerns and gripes about buying wholesale from Kidrobot have either been addressed to my satisfaction, or been eliminated.

So, onwards and upwards, happy tra-la-la frolicking, hand-in-hand with Kidrobot! Expect us to stock most, if not all, of the 8-inch Kidrobot Dunny releases in the future, plus anything else priced above $40 retail that I think might sell.

There are a TON of really interesting pieces coming down the pipe from Kidrobot. I hear whispers. Get ready!

"Rose and Sky" - Custom 8" McStomp Dunny by Jon-Paul Kaiser

by
It's always great when a collector receives his/her commission from an artist. Not only do they get what could possibly have taken months, but the world also finally gets to see what's been created. One of Jon-Paul Kaiser's latest commissions reached it's destination and now everyone gets to envy this lucky collector. Jon-Paul was commissioned to create a custom based on a Jaeger from Pacific Rim, using a Penelelope McStomp 8" Dunny. Jon-Paul was excited to be able to customize, this already amazing, 8" dunny and he drew inspiration from the "Gypsy Danger" Jaeger. Jon-Paul named the piece "Rose and Sky", armed with power sword and battered shield. As with many of Jon-Paul's customs, Jon-Paul utilized the existing design, accenting curves and hard edges, while having a somewhat minimalistic design. Since the McStomp 8" Dunny also came with a 3" Dunny pilot, this custom would not be complete without a custom pilot. Another great custom produced by the steady handed Jon-Paul Kaiser. As with most customs by Jon-Paul Kaiser, the finished photos were taken by photographer Justin Allfree.

Custom 8" Hazardous Taste Dunny - Sket One x Huck Gee

by

For the second time in their 10 year careers, Sket-One and Huck Gee have come together to bring you their latest creation, Hazardous Taste, a custom 8" Dunny. Okay, this is actually the second time in a few months that these two artists have teamed up and it's likely(depending on how the sales go for these) that there may be another version in the future.

This GID Custom Dunny features the Skullhead work of Huck Gee and combines that with the signature Dunny bottle design work of Sket-One. The outcome is one nuclear 8" Custom Dunny, which is only going to be available to purchase during a 24 hour window. Retailing for $475 plus shipping, Hazardous Taste will go live and be available to purchase from Midnight on Friday the 13th of June 2014 to Midnight 24 hours later, Pacific Time. A fitting date, considering the overall theme of the custom is quite deadly. Keep in mind that each custom will come signed by both artists, and should include(unconfirmed) the clear nuclear waste Barrel, Gloves and custom Hang tag. This should be a nice addition to any GID collection shelf.

Will there be another version? Who will either artist team up with next? Can everyone's bank account take so much awesomeness in such a short period of time??? Only time will tell. In the meantime, for those who are so inclined, be sure to set that reminder to make a purchase because once the time is up, no more orders will be taken. We all know what the costly alternative is when one sleeps on a release.

WHT/BLK Custom Dunny Series by Ryan The Wheelbarrow

by
Ryan "the Wheelbarrow" Ferrell continues to make customs using his somewhat free form ty_po style of art, with his latest custom Dunny series: WHT/BLK. It's been some time since Ryan made the move from Colorado back to Florida and it seems that he's getting back in the groove, letting paint fly.

Available now, each one of these dunnys are a unique 1 of 1 piece of art, that come with an equally unique hand screen printed box. With some figures featuring strategic lettering to produce facial features like eyes and mouths, the series as a whole is a great example of Ryan's style of art.

From Ryan's Site:
My new ty_po custom Dunny Series WHT/BLK will be releasing this Friday, June 7 at 10 pm EST in my webstore. There will be a series of 10 blind boxed 3" Dunnys for $58 each and one 8" Dunny for $310. Each 1of1 typographic miscreant is crafted with white vintage dry transfer instant lettering (Letraset/Chartpak) on black spray paint and will come packaged in a uniquely hand screen printed box.

Also available by Ryan is an 8" Dunny which is also painted in the WHT/BLK theme. This 8" Dunny sells for $310 plus shipping, while the 3" Dunnys sell for $58 plus shipping.

Quetzalcoatl 8" Custom Dunny by The Beast Brothers

by
The Beast Brothers recently released information regarding an 8" Custom figure based on their 2007 Kidrobot Azteca I Dunny design, the Quetzalcoatl Dunny. Rather than wait for KR to make a move to create this wonderful design, the Beast Brothers decided to make it themselves. If you don't already subscribe to the Beast Brothers newsletter, be sure to sign up so you get all the up to date information for anything Beast Brothers.

From The Beast Brothers site:
The Quetzalcoatl Dunny was the most coveted mini figure of the 2007 Kidrobot Dunny Azteca series. And now The Beast Brothers are set to release their Quetzalcoatl design for the first time as an 8” custom figure.
This amazing sculpt is one of the most elaborate and detailed to date, hand painted and donning a faux leather poncho, each piece will come safely packaged in a laser engraved wooden box.

Starting Friday, June 21st at 1pm EST, you will have only 24 hours to purchase this unique and rare custom figure for only $450

All sales are final.
Like many previous releases before this one, the Beast Brothers have decided to make this custom figure available as a limited release, open for only 24 hours, starting Friday June 21st at 1PM EST. This means that the run size will depend on how many people actually make a purchase, with the final run size never being released. With the price set at $450 plus shipping, I can see many collectors freaking out, since the money drain known as SDCC is just weeks away. Any collector who picks up this piece will sure be glad he/she did.

Meltdown Dunny 8" by Chris Ryniak

by
Celebrate a Happy Valentines day with a new 8" dunny by Chris Ryniak. Using Chris' Apocalypse Series Dunny design, Kidrobot has produced an 8" version of the Meltdown Dunny. The Meltdown Dunny is going to come in 4 different GID and translucent colorways, limited to 500 pieces for each color.

Meltdown Dunny

Of course, Kidrobot is not going to make it easy for the completists out there because each colorway is going to be offered by a different type of retailer. The Green edition is going to be sold exclusively by Kidrobot retail stores, while the Yellow edition is going to be the online exclusive for Kidrobot.com. International retailers are going to sell the Orange edition and the US retail stores will get the Pink edition. I personally am looking forward to the Pink edition and this 8" Dunny. Hitting the store on February 14, each Dunny is going to retail for $75 (£60 UK, €69.60 EU).

Angry Woebots Custom Dunnys and MADL

by
It looks like Aaron Martin, Angry Woebots, has had some late nights laying some paint and creating a bunch of very cool one-offs. Aaron has already released a couple of 3 inch dunnys and some mini Teddy Troops, which already sold out. His next round of custom one-offs include four "Shadow Friend" 3 inch dunnys. This is definitely creating more excitement with collectors, especially with Aaron's much anticipated Kidrobot 8" production Dunny releasing December 6th, also titled "Shadow Friend".

The Mono-tone Dunnys are going to sell for $150 each plus shipping, here. All of which are awesome and would make a great addition to any collection.

Clockwise from upper left: "Spacer", "Silence", "Sneaks", "Alert"

Aaron is also putting up a sick custom MADL, which is going to sell for $300, here. My guess is that it's a 5" MADL. Custom MADLs don't come up very often and Angry Woebots custom MADLs are even more rare.

All the pieces are expected to be released at 12pm PST. For those of you who are keen on picking up one of Aaron's customs, you better get your favorite loaded up and F5 button ready. Since Aaron doesn't create custom Dunnys often, I'm sure the few that he is releasing is already being eyed by dozens of collectors worldwide. These customs are going to go quick, making a few collectors very happy and many left with nothing but hoping for another release. We will have to wait and see if Aaron is going to do another set of customs.

If you're in the San Francisco or LA area next week, be sure to hit up the Kidrobot signing and Dunny release. Aaron is going to be signing at both stores: LA on December 5th, from 6-8 PM for a pre-release and San Francisco on December 6th, from 6-8PM also. Check out the info here.
