SubUrban Vinyl Designer Con 2014 Exclusives

This year, SubUrban Vinyl is making it's way out west for Designer Con 2014. At Booth #515, SubUrban Vinyl is going to have a few more exclusives to add to the list, including Brent Nolasco's latest edition of his Hunter figure, Swamp Thing. With a small edition of 3 pieces, each 8" hand painted piece is going to be priced at $120.

In addition to the awesome figure, SubUrban Vinyl will also have an exclusive print from Jon-Paul Kaiser, titled "Ripper". Limited to just 50 pieces, this 18" x 24" screen printed print is going to be priced at $70 each. Jon-Paul Kaiser is also going to be making the trip out west from the UK and will be on hand for a signing. 

Be sure to check out Booth #515 for all the other original prints, art and customs that SubUrban Vinyl will have on hand. Also, be sure to check out the signing schedule and get some amazing artists to sign/doodle on whatever may be on hand.

Product of the Day - DIY Zukie 4-inch vinyl figure

Coming Soon - Toy Burst Exhibition From More Than Sunshine

 

 

More Than Sunshine is putting on a show! Sunny Orlando, Florida's Redefine Gallery will host a toy show featuring vinyl, resin and plush pieces contirbuted by both local and international artists.

 

The show opens July 18th, where opening reception will also feature a live 3D Printing demo from the OCLS.

SubUrban Vinyl Exhibition - Time To Kick Some Ass!

 

Sub-Urban Vinyl Gallery and a whole lineup of butt-kicking artists are putting on a show this Saturday, May 11! Artists had free reign to contribute what they felt inspired to offer- both 2D and 3D pieces will appear in the show, along with hand-painted customs and resin sculptures.

7 Deadly Sins Dunny Dragon custom series by Blazon Brikhaus

 I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Liz Sanquiche (aka Blazon Brikhaus) at the Zukie vs the World party at Toy Tokyo Underground... Liz made this insane set-up with 2 Zukies in the form of monsters. It was epic. You might have seen it in my video here.

Hot Rod Zukie custom by Benny Kline for Zukie vs the World

 Well, I went and did it. I made my first custom toy!
Alison Perez invited me to be a part of her upcoming Zukie vs the World custom show (opening at Toy Tokyo Underground, July 27th from 6-10pm) and I of course accepted! I've been knee-deep in custom toys for a few years now, watching artists rise up through the ranks and get famous. It's rad. I love seeing all the artists gain success, notoriety and sometimes, when they are SUPER lucky, they get to make their artwork a full-time pursuit! But...

 I've never made a custom toy myself. At least not a designer toy. When I was young I used to make static models a lot. Mostly cars, but sometimes planes or tanks or the Space Shuttle... later I graduated to R/C cars, still painting the Lexan bodies myself.... but I've never created a custom toy before.
So... to start myself off, I went back to what I know best: static models. I bought a dragster kit which had a nice-sized supercharged V8 engine, and built the engine. Some of you might have followed along on Instagram when I did that (if ya wanna follow me, I'm "tenacioustoys" on Instagram).

 After I had the engine built, I got in touch with Monster Kolor and picked up some paint. I invited Kris Dulfer over to hang on my roof and show me what's what... and when he got here I hacked up this Zukie's head and built a mount for the motor.

Then I got to spraying: Monster Kolor aerosols the whole way: base coat of silver, on top of that I layered C-Thru Red, and to finish it off, several coats of Gloss (aka clear coat). I've never used the paint before, and I have to say it worked perfectly. The Gloss top coat dried perfectly. Not sticky in the slightest! I highly recommend Monster Kolor aerosol, and in fact you can buy it from my shop here. Actually, you can buy Zukies in my shop as well.

It's really not the most complex custom toy I've ever seen, but it was damn fun making it and I'm proud of my first attempt! I feel a little better now that I'm part of the customizing community, as opposed to some outsider just writing about the customs and selling them. Most of my friends would probably consider me an insider already, but to be a real insider, you need to take part. Now I'm in! And I'll see you at Toy Tokyo on Friday!

Zukie vs The World show at Toy Tokyo Underground July 27th

The Zukie Show at Toy Tokyo Underground will feature 32 talented artists from around the world using the DIY Zukie platform as a basis for their customs. The event will be held at TT Underground Gallery July 27th -29th. The reception Party will be on July 27th from 6pm-10pm.

Brace Face Mickey by Alison Perez for PlayImaginative

 

Alison Perez (aka Miss Zukie) share with us the sweet and awkward Mickey custom she made for the PlayImaginative Mickey show: Brace Face Mickey! This Mickey "studies hard and never gets the girl. His favorite thing to do is read the dictionary."

The PI Mickeys are 6" tall and this one has dorky glasses.
