Carving The Comics - The Wonderful Wooden Toy Art of Charles Ponstingl

I'm going to take a slight detour from current designer toy coverage and bring you all something a little deeper. I don't know what else to say about this amazing and unique art, so I'll just provide some pictures and a link to the website by Mel Birkrant (another story in himself) to showcase the masterpieces he's collected by his friend and fellow pop-culture fanatic, Charles Ponstingl.

Do yourself a huge favor and follow this link. There is just way too much to show here, perhaps too much to take in all at once.

Don't Deadbeet around the bush!

Imma just break it down like this:
Exhibit A: Killer concept by Scott Tolleson
Exhibit B: Killer sculpt by George Gaspar of October Toys, scaled with OMFG figures
Exhibit C: 2 FREAKIN' DOLLARS EACH!?  Awesome.
Exhibit D: First Class Shipping option (so your $2 minifigure doesn't cost $11 to ship - a pet peeve of mine)

I did not feel guilty about buying these immediately and neither should you.

Flight 3" Dunny by Kano

Kidrobot and Kano, of Kanokid Studios, release the first Dunny of 2013, a 3" Dunny titled "Flight". The Dunny features a uniquely shaped head and a color scheme reminiscent of the old Transformers cartoon and toys. This Dunny design is limited to 3000 pieces and what looks to be 3 different colorways, however, there is no word on color ratios. The red, white and blue version is the main colorway, with the picture being on the Dunny box. Also, a purple and black colorway was leaked on Trampt. Nothing yet on the third colorway, but I'm hoping that the color is going to have more blues. If the color schemes look or sound familiar to anyone, just think Thundercracker or Thrust, Starscream, and Skywarp. Of course this is a reach, since there is no official word of what the influence behind Kano's design, but there seems to be more than meets the eye.

Flight Dunny Product Preview
The Flight Dunny will be hitting stores on January 17th and will retail for $14.95 US, £12 UK, and €13.90 EU, depending on your location.

Kumiho Custom Fonzo by Artmymind

Kumiho is a wonderful custom Fonzo creation for the "Fonzo Love NY" show at My Plastic Heart by the duo at Artmymind, Guillaume & Julia Lachambre. With the Artmymind duo recently having to move studios, while also enjoying the holidays, I am amazed with this latest creation. Artmymind did a great job with the Fonzo by making it stand 8" tall and even giving it a tail. The metal looking arm reminds me a bit of the recent film, "The Man with the Iron Fist". The colors and other sculpted features stand out in pictures, which leads me to believe that this piece is going to look even better in person. Made from epoxy clay, sculpey, acrylics, wood and other materials, Kumiho is just another representation of how good Artmymind is at creating great pieces of art. Whoever ends up this great piece is one lucky person.

The Fonzo Love NY show at MyPlasticHeart is going to be one great show. The show opens today, January 11, 2013. With the opening reception from 6pm-9pm with many of the artists making an appearance at the reception.

Killdroid 5000 2.0 custom by Josh Mayhem

The Killdroid 5000 Ver. 2.0 was inspired by the original Killdroid 5000 Josh created for the custom "Dunny Show" at Plastic Chapel in Denver CO. This collector wanted something similar to the original so Josh kept the aged metal look while implementing the look and style of a Gunny. The wings and head articulate with this piece as well.

Josh Mayhem is still accepting commissions for Gunnys in specific color variations and Gundam characters.

Deathscythe Gunny by Josh Mayhem

With the Deathscythe Gunny the collector wanted a Gunny with the features of the Deathcythe Gundam figure. The wings close around this custom as is does the original Gundam toy, and the head articulates as well.

"Something Wolfy this way comes."
The Wolf Rider. Kicked my ass but I'm really happy with the final results. I hope it shows.

Galactic Jerkbags x Suckadelic x Glyos - A Nasty Exclusive!

Unless you've been living under a big ol' rock - you know that two of the hottest things in designer toys right now are Glyos and The Sucklord. Love them or hate them, no one can resist their power forever. If you're feeling weak already and your wallet is prepared, then don't worry! The official Sucklord fansite, GalacticJerkbags.com has just announced their second Suckadelic exclusive: Interplanetary Bromance, and is planning to release it in the last week of January.

So far all we have is the header art and this fuzzy pic but we know that it will be limited to 21 pieces and that each figure is hand dyed and painted. IrishMofo (the mastermind behind Galactic Jerkbags) has hinted that there might be more to this than expected from the preview pics. The devoted should all stay tuned to his Twitter account for more teasers in the coming weeks while we wait for a drop date.

KidKratos by Commandante

Can't descibe words for this one. Commandante nailed this KidKratos. The sculpting and the paintwork is top notch. The blades are the finishing touch. Totally love it!

Domo x DC mystery minis

This is easily one of the cutest Domo series to ever come out. The DC theme works so well and fits Domo's sweet and pleasant charm. These miniature superheros stand strong at two and a half inches. Ready to drop on February 28th, they're a great catch at only $5.95 a piece. Inside the mystery boxes hide Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Two-Face, The Riddler, Shazam, 3 versions of Batman, 2 of Robin, and 3 of Superman. If you were to ask me if I'd want to be rescued by a Christian Bale Batman or a Domo Batman, I'd choose Domo any day.

Frank Kozik's "Redrum"

Frank Kozik posted this picture on his facebook mid-December. These Redrum resin hedgehogs are said to come out early January and, well, it is early January so keep your eyes peeled for these six inch Heathrows. They are limited to thirteen pieces and each sport a clear ax. Even though they are named "Redrum" (murder backwards) the swirls of red and the adorable hedgehog shape just makes them so darn lovable. They are priced at $120.00 a piece, plus shipping. Whenever these do go up for sale you will be able to find them here. I am a fan of Frank Kozik's Heathrow figures because it's different from the normal mass produced toys such as labbits and busts and so on. (although I am a great fan of all of that as well) You can tell it's handmade, you can feel the seams along the side and the bottom is rough but it makes it unique and a piece that stands in your collection with pride.

Skinner x Healeymade "The Wanderer" - Coming 1/18

Be sure to watch The Art of Skinner and Healeymade for more news of this resin collaboration - The Wanderer! Set to drop next Friday, January 18th.

"The infamous Sucklord has once again teamed-up with Clutter, bringing you the "Suckadelic Suckpax" limited edition, four-color, screen print. The Suckadelic Suckpax print will make it's debut at the Clutter Gallery (In)Action Figure Show taking place this Saturday. Embracing the retro design of trading card wax packaging straight out of the '80s, this colorful classic is sure to make you smirk as you gaze upon the man himself, wearing his notorious Boba Fett helmet, carrying a ghetto blaster! Based upon the Suckpax Series 2 release's art, we're not sure if buying this will make you an asshole… but you'll certainly feel like one if you don't!"

Resin Minifigs for Kaiju Kaos: Smackdown by Bailey Records & Papagrim Toys

KAIJU KAOS is a tabletop miniatures game where two or more players pit their hand-painted metal and resin armies against one another. KAIJU KAOS is a strategic skirmish game. It’s not just a matter of lining up models on the table and the person who goes first is the winner. KAIJU KAOS requires cunning and adaptability because at any time an opponent can drastically alter the current situation with an unexpected action or a lucky roll of the dice. A solid strategy and good implementation combined with a little luck will enable the weakest troopers to bring down the mightiest monster. There are various unnamed troopers and specialists to build armies with, but the true heart of KAIJU KAOS is in the characters – whether they’re human, Kaijin, or colossal Kaiju bent on destroying everything in their path.

KAIJU KAOS: SMACKDOWN is a “death match” variation of KAIJU KAOS where players quickly battle using one or more 45mm tall character models on a 2x2 foot tabletop. The object of the game is to be the last model standing by defeating your enemies. Every faction in KAIJU KAOS, along with a healthy dose of Mercenaries, will be represented in SMACKDOWN.

New character models will be released regularly through their webstore at Acheson Creations. Rules, stat sheets, and official game aides can be purchased at www.WargameVault.com.

KAIJU KAOS is a new Intellectual Property of Bailey Records. Learn more at www.kaijukaos.com

“Since it’s conception, I’ve dreamed big with KAIJU KAOS and have wanted to tear down traditional barriers within the industry,” said Bryan Borgman, Bailey Records’ owner and KAIJU KAOS miniatures game designer.  “Besides making a miniatures game using colossal monster miniatures, we have a full-length soundtrack, and now collectable, designer toys that are fully compatible with KAIJU KAOS in addition to highlighting their own special version of the game called SMACKDOWN.”

“When I decided I wanted to try and break into the designer toy market with original ideas, I sought out the talented Steven Patt (aka oOMoSOo) at Papagrim Toys to be my collaborator and primary sculptor. In early 2012, Steven released his own limited edition minifigures in a series called Nuked! and he has a familiarity with tabletop gaming. Over the past several months we have been working behind-the-scenes in preparation for this launch. On Friday you will see the first fruits of our collaboration when we release:

·         Orcco the Everfolk, the Martial Artist Orchid Titan champion
·         Earwig the Insectien, the Scout Specialist Battler Beetle
·         Atticus the Wicked Werewolf, the vicious Saboteur!

“Each set of minifigures will contain one of each character sculpt and the initial release will be limited to 40 sets cast in black resin. In addition to sculpting, Steven is handling all the production of the initial release.
The sets will be released online this Friday evening at 8pm EST at baileyrecords.storenvy.com for $25.00 a set. Once the limited edition black sets sell, regular production of each figure will resume at Acheson Creations in our standard gray color. More limited edition colors may appear from time to time if demand warrants. More sets will be released quarterly throughout 2013.”
