Scott Kinnebrew Fang custom Qee for So So Happy show

by
Scott Kinnebrew sends us his submission to the So So Happy custom show, which involves custom Qees from over 30 artists. I must admit that despite keeping tabs on almost everything that Toy2R does, I had no idea who or what So So Happy was. So I went to their website... and I still have no idea. Apparently they are a California studio that makes stuff and donates to charity. They seems to have many characters that they license out. I DID manage to figure out that Scott's Fang custom is based on one of their characters, which is available as a plush here. Of course, Scott stuck Fang in a Stormtrooper suit! Cool custom. Here's more pics of Scott's custom Fang:

Scott writes:
Here's the Qee I'm dropping on the Toy2R / So So Happy show.  He started out as a Pig, but got a few mods and some homemade armor to wrap up the look.

I picked "Fang" after I read all the different bios because he looks like a devil, he's into custom toys, loves Mongolian BBQ, and he dresses like a Stormtrooper at Renaissance Fairs...seemed like my kind of dude.  I haven't done a Qee in a while, and it reminded me of how much I like the platform.

Domo & Friends set in stock now

by
From left to right: Tashanna, Domo & Mr. Usaji
This sweet boxed set features Domo and his 2 buddies, all seen on Japan's NHK TV station. These figures are about 4 inches tall each. In case you have no clue what is happening here, Domo is NHK's official spokesmonster. I've never seen any toys here in the US that featured all 3 of these characters, but they're here now! So I snagged a case. Buy the set here for only $17.99.
Yes, everyone will think you're weird. It's OK.

Daniel Yu was a part of the AWESOME October Toys Kickstarter-funded project called OMFG! (outlandish mini figure guys). The 2" figures in this series are an homage to our beloved M.U.S.C.L.E. men figures we all played with 20 years ago... all sculpts were developed by members of the designer toy community, and crowd-funded by artists, toy collectors and shop owners like myself!

Daniel is releasing his Artist Proof edition hot pink Crawdad Kid figures, as well as a bunch of custom Crawdad Kids, today. Go here to his store to buy them at 9PM EST tomorrow (Sunday March 4th), or check out his blog post here for more info and pics.

casting shadows pain — signature edition available

by
Casting Shadows- Signature Edition from Coarse Toys is now available to us. Retail price will be around $362 per set (don't hold me to that). Email us if you're interested as we'd need to place our order now. The figures are made and almost ready to ship to the US.

Featuring two vinyl figures, "noop" – arched in misery and "nism", peering from under his protective husk – complete with sharktooth warning markings. The set comes with a fabric kite, floating above the scenery and a set of typographic leaves, spelling out "coarse".

The assemblage speaks love, vulnerability, betrayal and revenge, all intertwined to create a unsettling perspective of the future. Bringing the declining mood of all coarse creations to a tipping point.

The ill-fated pair comes sheltered in soft black sponge, and packaged in a smooth matte-black box. Sheathed in a casting shadows sleeve complete with interactive pop ups – a nism teeth shield "love ends" and a noop blood gate "time to harvest", waiting for you to test the balance of their drastic detachment.

Suckadelic Gay Empire resin action figures in stock

by
The Gay Empire figure is 3.75" resin figure on a silk screened card back, made by the Sucklord here in New York City. This was supposedly the first openly gay action figure, as reported by one of the local papers here in NYC. It's also the first time we've been afforded the opportunity to stock a Suckadelic figure in our shop! Each handmade piece is assembled and "splattered" by the Sucklord himself.
The Sucklord uses local sweatshop labor to actually pour the resin, as lowly task which he no longer wishes to do. What a bastard!
The fame is going to his head. Expect a Britney Spears-style meltdown from him soon.

AW177 custom Mickey Mouse figure for PlayImaginative

by
Our good friend, local artist AW177, got one of the 6.5" Mickey platforms in the mail from PlayImaginative, and in true AW177 style, he used bold graphics and cultural iconography to create this "Dragon Ninja" custom.

Allen writes:
I have a bit of news - I was asked by Play Imaginative to custom one of their 6.5" Mickey Mouse vinyl art figures.  This piece will be displayed at shows by Disney/Play Imaginative and will be up on their website.

To celebrate the year of the dragon 2012, I made Mickey into a "Dragon Ninja", complete with equipment belt, shurikens, pouches for gear, striking/climbing knives, dragon claws on feet and hands, and nunchucks! You can place the nunchucks into the back for storage.  Dragon symbol on the upper ear, black outlines to give it a more animated/cartoon feel.  This is my real first time sculpting, but I'm happy with the results.

This custom is based on one of the designs I submitted to Play Imaginative/Disney for possible production, so if you like to see it made, please let them know!

Pictures are up on my Flickr.

Rsin custom Bellicose Bunny "Quasi" bears some resemblance to the platform

by
Rsin also rocked a Bellicose Bunny for the Bellicosity show at TAG (March 23rd).

Rsin writes:
So the first 3 days of this piece I was ready to give up.  I ran into so many problems making this work.  I walked out of the studio a few times, cause I was ready to toss it against a wall.  But in the end I cleared my thoughts and made it work.  Now I love this piece.

Named this piece Quasi, cause growing up my lil sister had a rabbit named Quasimodo, and also the definition of Quasi is "Having some resemblance"  I took the original design by Nathan Hamill and just put my spin on it, but still resembles the original piece.

To follow Rsin, you have many options: Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus, Deviant Art, Flickr, and his shop.

Custom Mickeys by Don P and Shawn Wigs

by
So PlayImaginative, it seems, has taken a page out of my own playbook and is putting up an online custom show here focusing on their new Mickey Mouse DIY platform. I've seen a ton of cool pieces from my circle of artists (thanks Facebook) but here are two from guys that specifically reached out to me: Don P and Shawn Wigs. Don P's piece above is called WARZONE Mickey. I don't think Shawn named his piece (below) but it's a hella creepy clown. All clowns are creepy to me. You can find out more about Don P here, and you can follow Shawn here (both are Facebook links). To see other customs in this show, go here.

RAMPAGE x Imps and Monsters MANOTAUR sofubi: in WAX!

by
Manotaur WAX!, originally uploaded by rampage.toys.
Jon Malmstedt sends us word from Japan- another project in the works! This is the Manotaur figure he's creating with Justin Hillgrove of Imps and Monsters- a SWEET sculpt if I do say so myself. In terms of the progression of how a vinyl toy is created, it needs to be molded in clay, and then wax. The clay is "waxi-fied", and the wax was at the mold maker as of the 21st of Ferbruary, meaning this project is well underway! The official release is scheduled for the weekend of Emerald City Comic Con - Seattle's Comic Con - starting March 29th. There will be blanks up first, and a really small batch of RAMPAGE handpaints as well.

After the event, anything left will go in the Imps and Monsters site (http://www.impsandmonsters.com/3dstuff.html), and I think Justin might be offering a pre-order now as well. Blanks will retail for $65 - painted versions pricing TBD. You can also follow that link to read the backstory on the Manotaur.

Jon says: Following the initial release of blanks and handpaints, we will be having masks made, and regular runs will be painted in (generally) simple masked paint schemes - with one-offs from Both Justin and myself and RAMPAGE micro-runs on occasion. You can expect some teaming up of the Manotaur and the Ugly Unicorn.

Pictures of the monster, 8 inch Wax Proto can be found on Jon's Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/27483582@N00/

Apple from Beyond custom by OsirisOrion

by
As the curator and organizer for his own Bad Applez custom show, you'd expect OsirisOrion to create a stunning piece... He didn't disappoint! Osiris' signature multi-color metallic paint is in full, brilliant effect on this piece, which he titled "Apple from Beyond".

Osiris writes:  I used magic sculpt, bamboo sticks, and Monster Kolor paint on this custom. He's approx. 4 inches tall and priced at $125.00.

You can buy OsirisOrion's custom apple here.

Bad Applez custom by Ian Ziobrowski

by
You know how that old saying goes:
"Give a man an apple, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to customize an apple, and he'll turn it into a monster. Give Ian Ziobrowski an apple, and he'll smoke weed out of it."

Not sure if I got that saying exactly right... but I'm sure the last part is right. This is Ian's entry into the Bad Applez Inc custom show. In typical Ian fashion, the piece is both aesthetically pleasing and also works within the framework of his NUGGLIFE world. You can buy this piece here.

Jon Walsh and ServeEm blind Mini Munny trade

by
Gremlifly Mini Munny custom by ServeEm
A customizer named Jon Walsh recently got in touch with me about a Mini Munny blind trade be did with ServeEm. Both of these guys are boardies on the KR forums, which is a hotbed of customizing and custom toy industry interaction.

The Incredible Mini Munny custom by Jon Walsh
 Jon writes:
I recently participated in a 1 for 1 Mini Munny trade that I thought you might like to post on your site. Here is the background information:

Late last year ServeEm and myself decided to a blind trade, with each of us creating a MunnyWorld figure for the other person. We had free reign to do whatever we decided and once complete we would ship to the other person without them seeing the piece finished. I received my piece first from ServeEm, a Gremlifly, which is part gremlin, part butterfly and 100% awesome. (see more pics here)

My piece was a little delayed as it took a USPS detour north of it's destination but did arrive safely. His name is The Incredible, a killing machine built with pure chaotic genius. Unfortunately he is destined to destroy all of his owners at some point, so ServeEm better beware. (see more pics here)

We both can be found on the CTU and KR forums and are available for commissions. My contact address is jonwalshcustoms@gmail.com

Looks like a sweet trade for both of these guys! It's neat that people can meet up online and develop enough trust to send along precious customs to each other.
